Spring 2010 Projects

Alliance for Community Trees, located in College Park, Md., serves and supports a network of member organizations committed to promoting urban forestry, conservation and education.  The SVC team researched best practices in corporate partnership strategies, conducted primary research on the nationwide volunteer base of ACT, and proposed recommendations on corporate outreach.

Bethesda Green is a local sustainability hub founded by a Smith School alumnus in 2008.  The SVC consultants assisted Bethesda Green in building a business plan, defining operational priorities and conducting a market analysis.
SVC MBA Consultants: Julia Griggs & Sara Herald

Centro Artistico y Cultural Buena Vista, a community arts organization located outside El Paso, Tx., offers educational and cultural programming for the community.  The SVC team assisted the brand new organization in formulating a business plan for a retail cafe that would provide sustainable funding and establish itself as a place for the community to congregate.

Humane Farm Animal Care, based in Herndon, Va., works to improve the lives of farm animals through its certification program and advocacy.  The SVC team developed social media strategies for raising awareness and funds for the organization, set up presences on several key platforms and developed a best practice guide to using the platforms.

LifeSmarts, a program of the National Consumers League, is an interactive consumer education program focused on teens.  The SVC consultants helped develop a marketing plan, including slogans, channels and incentives, to raise awareness for the program among potential coaches and secondary educators.

Maryland Theatre for the Performing Arts, a new facility proposed in Annapolis, Md., is a multipurpose performing arts space aimed at elevating the local arts community and attracting premier talent to the region.  The SVC team conducted several case studies on the effects of the entrance of large performing arts facilities on the surrounding arts communities.

PACT is a nonprofit affiliate of Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore, Md., providing comprehensive therapy services to special needs children, particularly from low income families.  The SVC consultants assisted PACT in analyzing and reviewing its operations, assessing current service delivery models and procedures and recommending changes to scheduling and marketing to reduce no-shows.
SVC MBA Consultants: Lisa Domeshek & Helena Wagner Porto Rocha

Permaculture Credit Union provides affordable financial services to its members in Santa Fe, N.M., to support ethics of permaculture–care of the earth and people, and the reinvestment of surplus for the betterment of both.  SVC Consultants researched alternative capital sources, drafted an industry white paper and prepared an analyst brief with their recommendations for the PCU board.

Preston Mitchum, Jr. Foundation, based in Baltimore, Md., provides educational after-school programming and community services to address the effects of poverty and violence on at-risk youth. The SVC team developed a streamlined volunteer management database and researched and recommended strategies for maintaining relationships with volunteers.

Rutland Area Farm and Food Link is a regional nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to local foods in Rutland, Vt.  The SVC consultants researched and developed a business plan for scaling operations of a workplace CSA (community supported agriculture) program, including five-year financial projections, an operational development outline and marketing recommendations.

SportsChallenge Leadership and Education Alliance uses sport as a tool to develop and empower student leaders from diverse backgrounds who positively impact their teams, schools and communities. The SVC team assisted in the development of corporate and foundation outreach strategies, including researching prospects and identifying appropriate metrics to incorporate into an ‘ask.’
